Abstract

Among minerals used in the manufacture of medicine, industrial minerals are distinctive. Barite is one of the industrial minerals used in the pharmaceutical, radiological and medical industries. This research was conducted to investigate the possibility of using barite from West Azarbaijan province in the pharmaceutical industry. For this purpose, samples from Barite Ghareblagh, Marnah, Abdolah-Abad and Shakh-sefid mines were collected. Samples were then prepared and analyzed by doing XRF and mineralogical studies. The analytical results were compared with the USP drug standard for barium sulfate. According to the results, samples of all mines had a high amount of heavy metals and BaSO4 content was lower than those of USP standard. The sample of the Shakh sefid mine with a barite grade of 93.3% has shown the most consistency with those of standard. In order to obtain the standard conditions, sample of Shakh sefid mine were processed by doing experiments based on Dennis W.J. Stone method. After processing, the product with 99.3 percent Barium sulfate, and density of 4.91 (gr/cm3) and with heavy metals content lower than the pharmaceutical standard was obtained. In general, it can be said that by performing several stages of simple processing operations such as grinding, crushing, milling and leaching on West Azarbaijan Province barite, a product that meets the pharmaceutical standards which is applicable to the pharmaceutical industry could be obtained. The cost comparison also shows the effectiveness in comparison to the imported barite samples.
